Burn-a-flags: the flag is a symbol of national pride as well as dissent. It is often the symbolic centre of protest, both as an empowering symbol, as well as the object that represents the ‘bad’ against which is protested. Burning flags is such a usage of the flag, which has a lot of consequences. Firstly, it is a very clear and strong message. Secondly, it antagonises between different groups. Yet, more and more flags are being made of fire repellent materials – making it almost impossible to burn them. This immediately renders the message of burning a flag obsolete. Therefore, the PSS has designed a series of handmade candles in the shape of flags, so that one can burn a flag at home – and these always burns.
